If you haven’t heard of it already, let us tell you about Hold On To You, the captivating first release from singer songwriter Chris Dickson. Hailing from New Jersey where he was a worship leader in churches across the US, Dickson underwent a life-altering health scare several years ago that has made a huge impact on his song writing and his career. Though Chris' faith was tested through the experience, in God’s strength he was able to rise above this trouble and triumph over it. The CD, Hold On To You, was written during these experiences. In an exclusive interview, STREETBRAND catches up with Chris and discovers what makes Hold On To You the album it is. {mosgoogle left} SB: Chris, tell us a bit about what happened to you a few years back which led you to write this album. CD: I was diagnosed with a pituitary tumour. I was also told by the doctors that I most likely will not be able to have kids of my own. Because of these things I ended up entering a season of depression. After receiving prayer and believing that God was going to heal me, the pituitary tumour miraculously disappeared. Although the tumour itself was gone, the effects of the tumour were still present. I trusted in God for complete healing and one year later we were pregnant with our first daughter, Jenna. SB: That must have been a very difficult time. Did you ever feel tempted to give up on God? CD: No, not at all. Although it was hard to go through, God always let me know that He was with me. Constant encouragement from His Word, prayer, and the Holy Spirit helped me press on to see what good He had in store for me.
SB: So musically, how would you describe your sound? CD: Acoustic rock. The music is fresh sounding, yet simple enough to allow the emphasis to be on the lyrics.
SB: What’s been the best thing about the Hold On To You journey? CD: Really learning that God never promised to remove us from situations, but He did promise that He would help us walk through them. Looking back, it has caused me to grow in all aspects of my life and it makes me extremely grateful for my life now with my family.
SB: Tell us about one song in particular on the album and how it came about. CD: Hold On To You was a song that came from a point of physical, mental, and spiritual exhaustion. I reached a point where I realized all I could do was cry out to God and say that I was going to praise Him no matter what the situation and trust that He was in control of the future. At His feet I could find the strength and the hope I needed.
SB: What’s your vision for the future of the music ministry you have? CD: My vision is to share my faith and experiences with others through my music and testimony. To offer them hope in Jesus. Whatever doors God opens for me in the future, I’ll gladly step through.
