Jaci Velasquez talks about love, light and life in general...
Words: Abi Colthrust

Jaci Velasquez InterviewHaving won multiple awards and been nominated for ten more, American Contemporary Christian Latin Pop singer Jaci Velasquez has become one of the most successful and loved artists in the Christian music industry. And talking to the lady herself, it’s not hard to see why. With her immense energy and warmth, Velasquez is a pleasure to chat to, and her passion for music, family and God are strikingly clear. March 18th this year marked the release of “Love Out Loud,” Velasquez’s 13th record and debut release on her self-owned Apostrophe Records. Velasquez teamed up with long time friend and producer of her first three records, Mark Heimermann, to make what promises to be her best record to date. In this interview, Velasquez chats to STREETBRAND about life, motherhood, marriage and of course, her new album.

SB: First off, let me congratulate you on a great album; I really enjoyed it.  You must be excited about its release?
JV:
Well you know I’m very excited of course, but I’m really glad you liked it!

SB: The album is full of incredible hope, what are the greatest hope-giving lessons you’ve learnt since your last album?
JV:
Oh gosh, you know I think that my four month old son is truly a vision of hope. I’m so in love with the little boy, I love him so much I can’t explain to you.  But you know it’s funny, I’ve kind of been everywhere meaning I’ve been through a lot over the past few years and honestly I don’t feel like I’m deserving of this four month old bundle of chubby joy, um, so he is to me a picture of hope, knowing that God doesn’t forget about us and you know, He forgives us and restores us and He lets us start again.

SB: Now in ‘Nothing but sky’ you sing ‘I’ve gone through the heartache, learned from the pain’ and I know the song ‘It’s Not You It’s Me’ is about the troubled relationship with your father. We have a lot of young people at STREETBRAND asking for advice on how to deal with divorce. From your own experience, when does the pain end, and how did you deal with divorce?
JV:
You know the thing is divorce is a bizarre thing. The memories, they never go away. Every year at Christmas we all get together and I still, I still think to myself, “Gosh I miss my dad”, you know, “I wish he were here to see this, to experience this with us”. But you know it does get better, it does. I always try to explain it like this: it’s like a death in the family except everybody’s still alive, you know it’s that kind of pain. It’s only time that heals that kind of pain and it takes years. And it also takes you realising “It has nothing to do with me”. Truly I felt at fault, but it had nothing to do with me. Then in my own divorce, man, it had everything to do with me, and with him! (laughs). I am so grateful that I went through that, I mean I wish I hadn’t had to go through that kind of pain in order to appreciate the great life I have now but I’m still grateful that I went through it because now I really can appreciate it more. So it’s kinda a weird thing, but I do know that God has a plan for all of us, easier said than to understand, but God really does have a plan for all of us and I’m just kinda here living out what He wants me to do.

SB: Now I know the song on the album called ‘A Likely Story’ is about being in a relationship with your husband Nic. I loved the song ‘Tango’ as well, and in it you sing about marriage being a “give and take” issue, what are the hardest things to give in your marriage?
JV:
AH!! (laughs) well, give and take, you know, it’s compromising. Honestly, you know marriage is bizarre; I didn’t really get it until I accidentally got married once before and then intentionally got divorced! Marriage is funny; you really do need to be equal. You need to be partners because if one is working and making all the money and doing all the work and it feels like the other one’s sitting at home reaping all the benefits, you know, dilly dallying around, at some point someone’s going to get tired. With my husband now, give and take is a great thing for us; obviously I’m doing what I need to do, and he’s like “ Well I’m busy, I’m doing what I need to do”, but then we meet in the middle and we come together, and there’s fireworks, it’s just beautiful.
