Marks Barfield - Building Schools for the FutureLondon has recently opened a brand new, ultra cool school called ‘Michael Tippet’ that is made to perfectly accommodate students with learning difficulties. It was designed by Marks Barfield less than two years ago, and in the last nine months it was actually built. This is record time for a school to be built! This impressive school is part of the Building Schools for the Future scheme and had to be built so fast because it was replacing two old school to bring 80 students together.

One of the main requirements for the school was flexibility.  Head teacher Jan Stogdon explains "the school can never predict what sort of students there will be from year to year and what their particular needs will be." To add to this, both the inside and the outside walls have been made so they can be easily changed in the future if needed.

The school wanted the new building to be a huge part of the community, not hidden away, and emphasising the need to prepare the pupils for adult-life in the real world and not to protect them against it.

The head teacher said, "We did it together. The input that students and staff have had throughout the design and construction process has helped our children understand the transition to a different site. We have all been amazed by how quickly the students have settled in to their new surroundings and how excited they are by the new facilities on offer."

The school also offers a garden area on the roof, where the children can learn about plants, and smaller wildlife. It also helps to keep the school warm in winter and saves the school money.

Marks, the designer of the school thought about everything to make sure the pupils would benefit the most, and in doing so has made eighty 11-18 year olds in London excited about learning, and more importantly he has made them very happy.
