Just Walk With Me is a breathtaking true story of a Christian youth project in Bradford working with people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The author, Jude Simpson, an entertainer and poet, recently spoke to STREETBRAND about her new book and her take on life. JS: Just Walk With Me is a true story of a year in the life of a Christian youth project in Bradford called “e:merge”. E:merge works with young people from some of the UK’s more deprived communities. The book tracks the progress of youth worker Niki who joins the project. Niki finds that her work there starts to challenge almost all the assumptions she had about life and faith, from the way she talks to what it takes to relate to a young person who is hurting. There are some very funny stories and some very poignant ones too, but above all, this is a book about the hope of God winning through. SB: Why have you decided to tell the story of the e:merge project? Why do you think we need to hear their story? JS: This book is not just about the e:merge project. It’s about the many people up and down the country doing similar work in difficult circumstances, without shouting about it or trying to get glory or recognition. The church needs to support and understand these people better, because they are out there taking God’s love to hurting communities. So I think the story will be inspiration and encouragement to youth workers everywhere, and also a way to show others in the church what youth work is like in the real world. SB: The book looks at the work of the e:merge project from Christian viewpoints. What views about Christianity have you portrayed in the book and why? JS: The main portrayal of Christianity in the book is through the lives of the main characters. These are people whose faith in God has led them to live their lives in service to young people, walking patiently, lovingly, acceptingly alongside them – often sacrificing their own comfort to do this. This mirrors God’s walk with us. There is another portrayal of Christianity in the book. That is one of a situation where people have unwittingly let the expectations of their own cultural background become so enmeshed with their Christian beliefs that they no longer remember which come from the Bible, and which have just been ingrained in their lifestyle. This can become a stumbling block to really welcoming people into the church. So in one instance, a youth worker takes a group of lads from the project to a church-run football tournament, because he thinks they will be welcomed there. He manages to get them all there on time, in their kit, and playing a whole match without beating anyone up. That is a major achievement! Yet the first reaction he gets from one of the Christian organisers of the event is to complain about his lads swearing. It’s an example of where someone needs to see the bigger picture. Some of those lads are suffering family breakdown, have fathers in prison, experience alcohol or drug abuse. What they need is to be welcomed by the church, not judged. |
