Words: Henry Yanney

Interview with gospel music group Ekklesia
Bringing a vibrant and colourful approach to their music, gospel quartet Ekklesia have been one of the highlights of the UK gospel scene over the last few years. STREETBRAND writer Henry Yanney speaks to Yolanda Sutherland, soprano in Ekklesia about the gospel music group.

SB: How was the group formed?

YS:
Ekklesia was formed by Nadine Lee, who had a vision to bring music that would appeal to all people from varied backgrounds, in order for the good news message of Jesus Christ, to be heard in a fresh way without compromise. Nadine, then approached, each member of the group individually and Ekklesia was born.

SB: You’re a very lively and uptempo gospel group, what are some of the topics that are imbedded within your music (if any)?

YS:
There are a wide range of topics imbedded in our music, such as the un-shamed blessings of God in all situations, salvation, love, God’s peace, the pressure to get the word of God to the nations as the cries of souls is so loud.

SB: You were tipped early into your career to be a big success by music business figures such as Kanya King and Mica Paris. What did those comments do for you – did they give you a boost or did it add more pressure for you to succeed?

YS:
We were honoured to receive the comments made by both Kanya King and Mica Paris. Ekklesia felt it just confirmed what we knew God had put in us, but it also kept us in a place of knowing we had to fulfil the vision which Nadine, our founder, had. This vision now became not only Nadine’s but ours, Ekklesia ’s. Every comment whether good or bad, great or small, aided us; they were and are stepping stones, which have caused us to grow.

SB: You took a break not so long ago to focus on family life and take a well-earned break. Was it difficult to return to performing?

YS:
We didn’t really take a break, we were always writing and recording, what we did stop doing for a while was live performances. In that time we were able to re focus , recharge, and finish the album. It wasn’t hard to return to live performances at all. It was and is exciting. For us, it was as if we never left, we just came back stronger, harder and above all so thankful to God for His mercies, joy and love He had shown us in the time we had spent working up to that point.

SB: Your new album is out now, Rain. What can fans (and new listeners) expect to hear on it?

YS:
People can expect to hear a bit of everything, in terms of style, writing and production; be prepared to be inspired, uplifted, blessed and challenged.

SB: Why is the new album called Rain?

YS:
The album is entitled ‘Rain’ as each song is a representation of how God continuously pours out Himself upon us, for example, Blessed, Still Love you, Call Him, I would go as far as to say every song on the album is screaming clearly about God outpouring upon us all.

SB: What song will especially speak to young people on Rain and in what way will this song minister to youths?

YS:
If you’re making me choose, the songs I think will speak to the youth will be, Rain, Still Love you and Pressure. The whole album was written with all in mind, so the whole album will speak to all.

SB: What one life lesson do you want to share with the readers of STREETBRAND?

YS:
I have learned that no matter where you are in life, what you have done or where you may come from God sees only your heart.  His love is so powerful that it removes the ugliest, deepest stains from your heart and past. God is able to hear you when no one else can, and see the things we think no one sees.  All God requires is our honesty and He takes care of the rest.  Proverb 3:56 ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path’.

SB: Do you plan to do any live performances any time soon?

YS:
We shall be appearing at Creation Festival, New Wine Festival, Soul Survivor and Gos Fest, to name but a few. For update information and gig listings please go to www.myspace.com/ekklesiamusik.

I've not actually heard of them before until now but I love what they stand for. They're not ashamed to carry the gospel banner for Jesus. I hope they go really far.
