Words: Elspeth Rae A new trend is emerging. A revolution of pre-teens and young adults who are refusing to be swallowed up by the fashion for tanned, brown, leathery skin. A breed of educated and inspiring fashionistas with their own unique look and style. A style that doesn't involve burning your skin and in worst-case scenarios, getting cancer.Have you ever opened a magazine to be confronted by an often quite orange looking 'celeb'? Someone who looks totally unrealistic and actually quite peculiar? It's this that some of you are revolting against. After performing a poll on over 1,000 However, a worrying issue remains. 42 per cent of young people interviewed said that that they would still prefer not to cover up in the heat, even if it means burning, simply because they are more concerned with their image. This is a real and in the worst-case fatal problem. We all know that a tan does not equal beauty. Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Nicola from Girls Aloud - these are all stunningly beautiful and successful paler skinned beauties. So why are so many of us putting our skin under such undue stress? {mosgoogle left} Listen. Having inherited my Dad's Scottish genes, I know how annoying it can be. I just don't tan unless I'm in the sun for a long, long time. I also understand that unless you're blessed with long, lithe limbs then a tan can help; both by making you look more svelte and by boosting your body confidence. A bit of colour naturally makes you feel better about yourself. However, that doesn’t mean I should lie in the midday sun while on my hols without slapping on the sun lotion. And it’s not just when we’re on holiday that we have to be careful. Most of us think that you can’t get burnt in The real problem is the lack of education surrounding how to use sun cream and protection. Teenage Cancer Trust have launched a campaign called ‘shunburn’ and heading the campaign is Leona Lewis. People don't realise that it's not just white skin that burns, mixed race and darker skin needs protecting too and Leona with the Teenage Cancer Trust want to make this clear. “I got really badly burnt a few years ago. It was very painful and extremely embarrassing.” This is what Teenage Cancer Trust’s ‘Shunburn’ campaign wants to change. By signing up at their website, www.shunburn.co.uk, not only can you receive free text messages reminding you to rub on the lotion, but you will be entered into weekly competitions to win some great prizes. “The important thing is to raise awareness about how sunburn can lead to skin cancer,” says Leona. “You don’t need to stop going out! It’s just a case of being more pro-active and looking after yourself and your friends. You can still tan, just do it properly!” Top tips for sunning yourself without harming your skin:

Good article guys, thank you. Contrary to the common belief that only fair skinned people can be affected by skin cancer, dark skinned people can also get skin cancer and people need to be aware of this and take necessary precautions to avoid it. It's good to see Leona supporting such a worthy cause.
