Did you know, among other things, the Bible is the greatest love story ever told? Its tells of how God has chased after his bride – the church; how He has fulfilled her every need, rescued her from her self-despair and from destructive relationships, and finally how He brings her safe and secure into His arms. But like all good love stories, it’s a rocky road, and the Bible does not shy away from the scandal entailed within this relationship.
An Unflattering Picture In the book of Hosea, God illustrates His relationship with mankind in human terms. He wants Hosea to experience what He feels, and so He tells Him to marry a hooker. That’s right. God’s relationship with us is likened to
that of a respectable, loving caring man who settles with a sleep-around. It’s not the most complimentary thing to be told, but you and I are prostitutes when it comes to our relationship with God. Why? Let me try and explain. We were created to be in a relationship with God. Our very existence is down to Him, He is the author of all good things and we were made to glorify Him. When our first parents Adam and Eve walked the earth, they were made to walk hand in hand with God, enjoying His presence forever. But God didn’t want to dictate that closeness, and so He gave us choice. And we chose to turn our backs on God. When we came to, and realised how miserable life without God was, we changed our minds, and went back to God...until something more attractive came along that is and then we were off again. No human has ever loved God the way He has loved us. Even those of us who call ourselves Christians today have to be honest with ourselves and admit that we let Him down all the time. We break our promises. We flirt around with ways of living without God; we go through days, weeks, even months without properly speaking to Him or giving Him praise.
God – the ultimate lover Throughout history, God has proved to be a faithful, wonderfully caring husband to an unfaithful, unlovable, inconsiderate church! God is the husband that always gives and forgives, he’s “slow to anger, rich in love”. (Psalm 103) He tells us in the Bible “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.” (Jeremiah. 31:3). God does the chasing, and His love knows no bounds – it’s everlasting. He’s great at putting love into action too. In human terms, He does all the phoning, He keeps promises, He gives great gifts, He is never distracted from us or “too busy” and He always pays for dinner (in fact He made it Himself!). And you always know where you are with Him; He’s completely dependable and consistent. He’s “the same yesterday and today and forever” as Hebrews 13:8 says. Yet simultaneously, He’s exciting and mysterious.
So....Why did beauty choose a beast? Why would God choose that kind of bride? Good question! He chooses us, simply because he loves us. He knows we would be hopelessly lost without Him stepping in to rescue us and show us such love. Romans 5:8 says: “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” It takes a God-sized heart to love a church like us. God takes delight in loving us back into a relationship with Him through Jesus’ sacrifice for our sin on the cross.
Are you feeling it? I guess because a marriage relationship is the most intimate human example of closeness we know, God uses it in the Bible to describe how we can relate to him. That closeness is not theoretical – it’s real! God wants us to feel closer to Him than to any other being. If you’re feeling far from God, then call out to Him today and that closeness can be yours, through Jesus. Take this promise to heart: 'Come near to God and He will come near to you.'
