I am sitting in the dentist's office when I pick up one of the magazines and quickly flip through the pages. Suddenly, a pair of bright red lips, magnified at least 10 times catches my eye, highlighted by the question “want kissable lips?”
I’m sitting on a train and someone has left a magazine on the table. Bored, I pick it up to read. A whole section is dedicated to sex and relationships and some of the headings catch my eye: “Celebrity sex secrets revealed”, “100 ways to be a better lover – how to have your cake and eat it”, “Real life: I slept with my best friend’s husband on the morning of their wedding”.
A hot topic that comes up again and again in the church is the issue of Christians dating, or wanting to date, non-Christians. It’s hard to be a young woman, you know. Not any old man could do it, that’s for sure. Not only are you constantly aware of your physical self and conscious of how you look to other people (this can be an exhausting and incredibly worrisome business, especially if you are having a bloated or fat day), but you are meant to claim that this perfectly finished exterior and self-confident interior are all completely natural and un-worked for, really, entirely unimportant - “My hair?
